DO GOOD WORK, CASH WILL FOLLOW
We live in a day where everyone thinks they are photographer or film maker, but they still have a lot lacking. Do I believe I am successful at Photography and Video? Yes, I do actually because I wake up everyday working for myself. For everyone out there that thinks just because you took a class or got camera and lens realize that's not even half the battle. I am going tell you why today.
The thing that we need to understand about professional photographers, and I remind you these are just my thoughts. Professional Photographers have thousands of dollars invested into equipment, they have contracts with clients, they have seasons of photography, they grind everyday. You know that I am close and tight with Josh Petersen a close friend and professional Photographer here in Rexburg with his studio on Main St.
Every month or so Megin and I will stop by and chat with Josh because we can talk about the same things. Recently we were talking about the battle of doing photography for the cash (which is not much after all the cost) or for the passion. Then we got talking about how we all watch Casey Neistat daily. How Casey says you should never set out to make money in video, the money should just follow.
Let’s chat about this subject “Do good work, and the cash will follow?”
When I am asked about photography it's hard to answer how much I love it. I’ll explain myself, see I love love love shooting engagements and weddings. The chance to be able to capture moments in something life that they are going have forever is everything to me. Hours are spent as photographer in weddings. I DJ-ed Weddings for years before being a photographer. I know how to help make it an experience and cut down the stress. I have been to a number of weddings, numerous classes and online learning on being a better wedding photographer. I have invested a lot of time and money into not only photography equipment but video equipment. It's common for Megin and I have over 10K into equipment when we show up to any wedding, and that’s not including our time and talent and post editing process. Just being real and transparent.
“Do good work, and the cash will follow right?”
I totally agree on doing good work trust me. I would not be where I am if I did not believe in doing good work and being humble, but here is where I get bold with this statement. There is a difference having a Photography Business and a photographer. You see, I love what I do but it's my job, it is not a hobby. Sorry to break your bubble out there that are reading this I am not trying to belittle at all. I just want to state being a Photography Business is 80% to 90% knowing how to be business minded and the rest a creative photographer. Everyday I am finding ways to reach out and serve more clients and get more sessions. I am constantly selling myself, constantly teaching myself more about how to run a business and how work excel.
Let’s coming back to weddings for example, there is a site called “costofweddings.com” it takes the average rates and the highest rates for a wedding in your area. We are based out of Rexburg or 83440 zip code. This is a screenshot.
So this what is crazy to me when you break the balance between doing good work and chasing the money. You have to educate yourself and know your surroundings. I don’t know how many times I have had reviews or personal messages back to me or Megin that we are not going be someone's photographer because they found someone cheaper. Nothing against that at all, but I started my Photography Business not wanting to be cheaper, I wanted to be best experience I could be and possibly become one of best photographer and video guy not only in Rexburg, but southeast Idaho.
Now some are reading this are probably thinking “Man, he is being bold today.” I want to share my thoughts because as we approach the season of brides and grooms coming to our site and view our work for their own personal weddings. I have to state Megin and I are here to serve you with our business and we have passion at creating great experiences and doing great work. If you don’t like our rates or work then there is someone else out there for you. I have spent so much time researching, studying, and testing the market to see what business plan platform would be best for Shearer Photo+Video to move forward in Rexburg and Southeast Idaho.
I believe in doing good work, and the more people we work with the more we are able to perfected doing more good work. It is not all about money, but there is balance because this a Photography business, not a hobby of photography. I beyond excited for 2016 because I believe that Megin and I have learned so much about running the Photography Business that we are excited for have goal of shooting close to 30 weddings in 2016 and we already have 6 booked. You want to know why I love Rexburg? It’s because I get to do what I love everyday and that is own and run a Photography business where we can shoot newborns one morning, making client video in afternoon, and then take sunset engagement pictures for couple that we are going to shoot their wedding too. I seriously love my job and I love what I do.
Remember do good work and the cash will follow.
